Fred moved to Alaska in 1964 and in 1966 to an outback corner of the Anchorage borough called Eagle River. There was no supermarket, no library, no paved streets and no lighted freeway no freeway at all for that matter. Eagle River was a homestead community of committed Alaskans who were going to stick it out through thick and thin. Fred felt right at home.
