In 1972, Fred took a job with Standard Oil of Ohio (Sohio). As a maintenance supervisor on the North Slope, Fred worked in and through the booming pipeline years maintaining the infrastructure that moves Alaskan crude oil from the ground to market. Sohio was purchased by BP and in 1984, Fred was laid off along with many other Alaskans hurt by the falling price of oil.

In 1976, while still working in the oilfields, Fred also started commercial fishing a few weeks a year. Once out of the petroleum business, he focused more on fishing and purchased a 32' Bristol Bay gillnetter which he christened the Dawn Treader after the ship in C.S. Lewis's novel series the Chronicles of Narnia. next page
