In 1985, Fred ran for the Anchorage Assembly and, much to his surprise, won. He went on to serve 3 terms in the Assembly and forged many lasting friendships with his colleagues and opponents, yes with his opponents too.

While on the Assembly, Fred successfully argued for tighter restrictions on "adult" nightclubs. Much to the chagrin of the sleaze lobby, Fred eliminated the selling of alcohol on the premises of new operations, and restricted their location and signage.

In 1996, Fred ran for the State House and, no surprise to his friends, won. In 2002, he ran for State Senate and won. In 2008, Fred was honored to be re-elected to the State Senate.

Fred's duties in the State Senate require moving and living in Juneau from January to early May each year. For the last several years he has rented quarters on the Princeton Hall a 65 foot classic yacht anchored in Juneau.
